¡Hola! Let’s Learn Spanish Visit New Places and Make New Friends
!Hola!/Hello! The adventure begins with Pete the Pilot telling readers they will be leaving on an imaginary trip to Mexico. He introduces some basic Spanish words and greetings to practice before landing in a sunny bean field !en un campo de frijoles!
Panchito Meet and follow the adventures of an energetic jumping bean named Panchito. Learn about Mexican culture as Panchito heads from the farm to the market and then to a birthday party where he meets new friends. Readers are introduced to additional Spanish words and phrases woven into the story and repeated often.
New vocabulary is translated into English only the first time it is introduced in the book, encouraging readers to apply what they are learning. For example, “At el mercado, vendors call out their wares, ‘Hats, tomatoes, beans! ¡Sombreros, tomates, frijoles!‘” (El mercado had been introduced on the page before.)
Te toco a ti/It’s Your Turn Time to practice what you’ve learned with conversation and vocabulary activities, including a treasure hunt and a skit. Find more fun ways to practice what you learned with the activity sheets available for download on the website.
Rincon Cultural/Culture Corner Learn more about the topics introduced in the story (like what exactly is a jumping bean?!) and practice the pinata-breaking song.
Una Mascara/A Mask Follow simple directions to make a traditional Mexican mask out of … frijoles!
Palabras/Words The final section is a handy glossary of words introduced in the book and organized by chapter for easy reference.
Note: An audio version of the book is available on the website and can be downloaded for continued practice. Follow along with the book and hear the correct pronunciation of the Spanish words. This is so helpful, and highly recommended!
